‘‘We wanted to focus on good, honest materials that would sit naturally in the surroundings. Joe completely got that from the start and delivered exactly what we hoped for.
The black charred timber gives the house a really understated impact. From the front it feels bold and sharp, with clean lines, but it still sits comfortably alongside the original 1970s brick. Against the green of the mature trees, it just works - it feels modern without being out of place.
At the back, the whole feeling changes. It’s softer, more open, and all about the connection to the garden. We’re lucky to have a really private, green space with mature trees and planting, and the design makes the most of that. Big windows across the kitchen, dining space, and office mean you’re always looking out onto greenery. The house feels light, calm, and airy - there’s a real sense of peace to it.
One thing that was really important to us was keeping the original footprint. We didn’t want to just push outwards like a lot of modern extensions do - we wanted to see what could be achieved by working with what was already there. By building up over the garage and adding lightwells and dormers, Joe created height and space in a really clever way. The rooms feel bigger, brighter, and more interesting, without losing the character of the original house.
A simple but brilliant idea was echoing the triangular roofline of the 1970s build. It ties everything together so naturally - it feels like it was always meant to be there.
We’ve been told these houses were quite iconic locally when they were first built, and it honestly feels like this has given it a new life for today. It respects what was there, but brings it up to date in a really thoughtful way.
One of my favourite spots is the small terrace off the main bedroom. It’s perfect for a morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening, surrounded by the trees - you feel like you’re sitting right up in the canopy with the birds. It’s a small detail, but it makes a huge difference to how the house feels.
Inside, we took inspiration from Scandinavian and Japanese design mixed with the warmth of 1970s materials - wood, brick, steel, and glass. Joe really ran with that and designed something that fits perfectly with how we wanted the house to feel. It’s warm and stylish, but still completely practical.
Throughout the process, Joe was easy to work with - he listened, offered different options, and really understood what we were trying to achieve. In truth, he got the brief straight away and delivered on it first time.
I would choose Joe again in a heartbeat - that’s if we ever decided to leave this house, which, in our current state of bliss, feels pretty unlikely!’’

The thing I love most about the house is the glass and the light.
